The orchestra and conductor presented compositions by the Strauss dynasty – as well as by Ziehrer, Hellmesberger, Lumbye and Tchaikovsky – not only to the audience in attendance in the Golden Hall, but also to millions of television viewers in over 70 countries worldwide. The two polkas “Tritsch-Tratsch” and “Feuerfest” were performed in their vocal versions with the participation of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. To mark the assumption of the chairmanship of the Council of the European Union by Denmark on January 1, 2012, the “Copenhagen Steam Railway Gallop” by Hans Christian Lumbye, the Danish composer who became known as the “Strauss of the North”, was performed for the first time on the New Year’s Concert. The second half of the concert opened with “Danse Diabolique”, a work of virtuosity and brilliance, composed by the former first violinist, concertmaster and conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic, Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr. The composer who employed the waltz form more often than any other of the great symphonists, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was represented for the first time on the New Year’s Concert with two compositions, “Panorama …
